Here are our guidelines on getting your paper ready for review at Axios

1. What kind of papers are suitable?

Currently, our review service is for papers reporting empirical, methodological, or theoretical research within our areas of expertise. Our service is effectively the first round of peer review, so please make sure that your paper has been carefully prepared and commented on by colleagues before you submit.

Axios Review suggests that authors use a professional editing service if they wish to improve the quality of English in the manuscript. We recommend that authors use Editage, a leader in English-language editing, translation, and author education services. We are happy to refer your paper to any journal that regularly carries research in our areas of expertise – if the journal hasn’t received a previous referral from us we’ll approach them while your paper is in review.

2. Choosing target journals

When you submit your paper we’ll need a ranked list of four target journals, with your preferred journal at the top. We recommend that your list covers a range of impact factors, and that all the journals listed have a track record of publishing in the subject area of your paper.

3. The Golden Rule: make life easy for the reviewers!

  1. Always include line numbers (this is essential)
  2. Send us your paper as a single pdf or MS Word file with the tables and figures at the end
  3. Try to keep the file size under 5MB
  4. Put the legends next to their respective figure or table
  5. Use vector graphics for all graphs, maps and diagrams. The R statistical package is excellent for all three. Pixel based graphics (.tif or .jpg) should only be used for photographs.
  6. Have your colleagues read your paper before you send it to us, or use an editing service like Editage. We will return manuscripts that are not ready for external peer review.

4. Formatting your paper

We recommend that you write your paper as if you were submitting directly to your top choice target journal, so you might want to follow their author guidelines as well.

If you would like your paper to be reviewed double blind (where both the authors and reviewers are anonymous), please ensure that the manuscript and supplemental material do not contain author names or any other identifying information. This includes removing author names and affiliations from the title page and header/footers, excluding acknowledgements, and ensuring there are no first person references to self citations.

5. Policy on preprints

Authors are welcome to send their paper to a preprint server such as PeerJ Preprints or bioRxiv. Having the paper on a preprint server will not affect our review process in any way. However, authors are advised to check the preprint policies of their target journals: some journals will not publish papers that have appeared as a preprint.
